How to Play (simplified directions)

Bocce is played with eight large balls and one smaller target ball called a pallina. There are four balls per team and they are made of a different color or pattern to distinguish one team from the other.

  • Teams are 2 or 4 players
  • Following a flip of a coin, the winner gets to toss the target ball into the starting zone and plays first. If that team fails to land the target ball in the starting zone, the other team gets to re-toss the target ball and goes first.
  • All balls are tossed/rolled underhand – similar to horseshoes/bowling.
  • Each team member alternates throwing one ball at a time (Team A, Team B, Team A, Team B) with a goal of rolling your balls closest to the target ball. Players can also try to strategically knock the other team's ball farther from the target ball.
  • Balls that go outside the boundaries of the court are considered "dead" and removed immediately from play until the end of a frame. If the pallina is knocked outside the boundaries of the court during play, the frame ends with no points awarded to either team.

How to Score

  • After all balls are tossed, only the closest team balls to the target ball are scored.
  • Score 1 point for each ball from the winning team that is closer than the closest ball of the other team. If the ball is touching or "kissing" the target ball, it is worth 2 points.
  • Play ends when a team reaches 11 points first and wins the game (you can play longer and up to 16 points, if you'd like).
